A new research shows pterostilbene, a powerful
antioxidant compound found in blueberries, may help in
combat of colon cancer.
Colon cancer includes cancerous growths in the colon,
rectum and appendix. It is the third most common form of
cancer and the second leading cause of death among
cancers in the Western world.
There is no certain cause of this cancer but some
factors can increase the risk like age, hereditary,
smoking, too much consumption of meat and a low fiber
diet.
Colon cancer treatment consists of mainly surgery,
radiation therapy and chemotherapy.
This study demonstrates that people needed to include
more berries in their diet especially blueberries.
Pterostilbene also appeared to lower some genes involved
in inflammation.
The compound has a potential to be developed into a pill
as well.
Although the study did not represent a way to cure
cancer, it did offer a way to potentially prevent it.
